COVID Odyssey: Spring Spruce up 39 ~ Post#922: NZ Delta COVID-19~ Scanning printed NZ Vaccine Passports a big fail

My attempts to scan two printed Vaccine Passports using the NZ Pass Verifier App have been a big fail.

Have you been able to scan your own printed Vaccine Passport?

Imagine trying to scan a large number of printed Vaccine Passports at a big event.

The resolution of the QR code is not sufficient to be read by the Pass Verifier App. Perhaps this should not be surprising since the QR code encodes around 612 characters.

I reported the issue to the NZ Pass Verifier Technical Support Team yesterday.
Here is their response:

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

One tip to try is to please try enabling the torch function at the bottom of the scan screen to see if that helps and try different distances so the camera can focus on the QR Code. We find a well lit area is best. The other thing to try is the distance from the QR code – moving back or forward to help the camera focus.

NZ Pass Verifier Technical Support Team

I had already tried the above. Probably a standard FAQ response.

There is clearly a big issue scanning the QR code on a printed Vaccine Passport using the NZ Pass Verifier App.

The support team needs to print out a Vaccine Passport (one of the team member’s own Passport will do) and try to scan the QR code.

If it works (doubtful), they then need to print the Vaccine Passport using a home printer and repeat the process.

These checks should have been made before Vaccine Passports were made available to the public.

I have had a QR code on my own business card for over 10 years. My QR code is easy to scan.

Printed Vaccine Passports need to be a similar size (business card size), perhaps vertical may be best. Vaccine passports also need to be readable when laminated or inside plastic sleeves.

Hopefully the NZ Pass Verifier team can produce a QR code (that can be easily scanned) perhaps twice the size of mine. This would be bigger than the current printed QR code on the Vaccine Passport.

Recommendations

  1. The NZ Pass Verifier App needs to be able to scan printed Vaccine Passports quickly and easily.
  2. The NZ Pass Verifier team needs to provide instructions on how to print a Vaccine Passport so that it can be scanned easily. This should not have been necessary but has been necessitated by the failure to be able scan printed passports.
  3. Printed Vaccine Passports need to be a similar size to a business card, perhaps vertical may be best. If necessary, reduce the number of characters so that a scannable QR code can fit on a passport the size of a business card.
  4. There needs to be an Exit button in the NZ Pass verifier App on all screens (including the Scan screen).
